As we come to the final day of Courage to Get Up, we discover that the story was never ultimately about the pool, the mat or even the miracle. It was about where Jesus was leading the man all along.

In this concluding study, we follow the healed man beyond Bethesda and discover that the final place we find him is in the temple, in the presence of God. While others focused on rules, traditions and the fact that he was carrying his mat on the Sabbath, the man himself was found worshipping. The system noticed the mat, but missed the miracle.

Through this powerful conclusion, we explore the deeper purpose behind every breakthrough. God's desire is not simply to change our circumstances, but to draw us closer to Himself. The miracle was never the destination. It was the doorway.

This final teaching challenges us to consider whether we have become so focused on the blessings of God that we have overlooked the One who gives them. It reminds us that every lesson, every breakthrough and every testimony is ultimately an invitation into a deeper relationship with Him.

In This Episode:

  •  The significance of finding the man in the temple
  •  Why the religious leaders missed the miracle
  •  The difference between pursuing blessings and pursuing God
  •  When people focus on the mat rather than the miracle
  •  Why God's presence is the true destination of every journey

Reflection:

Has your greatest pursuit become the breakthrough, or the God who brings it?

Series Conclusion:
May you have the courage to get up, the conviction to stay up and the faith to keep walking. And may your journey, like the man at Bethesda, lead you ever closer to the presence of God.

Seek. Discern. Obey.

Hello and welcome to the final day of this study series, Courage to Get Up. We arrive at a destination towards which this entire journey has been pointing. Over the past six days, we've explored what it means to rise above limitation, trust God's voice, embrace a new identity, remain steadfast in freedom, and share the testimony of God's faithfulness. Today we discover that the greatest outcome of the journey was never simply the miracle itself. It was the deeper relationship with God that the miracle made possible. We're going to be looking back at our base scripture from Saint John chapter 5 and verse 14. And I'm reading from the New Living Translation, which says, But afterward Jesus found him in the temple and told him, Now you are well, so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you. Well, you remember in day six we explored the power of testimony and discovered that what God has done in our lives is not just for us. We reflected on how God often uses our stories to encourage others, strengthen faith, and bear witness to his faithfulness. We also considered how the man's mat became evidence of transformation. Amen. What once represented limitation had become a testimony to God's power and grace. Well, today we arrive at the final destination of the journey. One of the most remarkable details in the story of the man by Bethesda, I think, is often overlooked. Because when we reach the end of the account, the man is no longer lying beside the pool waiting for something to change. Neither do we find him arguing with the religious leaders who challenged him about carrying his mat on the Sabbath. Instead, Jesus later finds him in the temple. Now this is significant because it reveals that the story was always about more than physical healing. Remember, for thirty-eight years the man's life had revolved around Bethesda. The pool represented hope, frustration, disappointment, and waiting. It was the place where he spent his days longing for a different future. Yet after his encounter with Jesus, we find him somewhere entirely different. We find him in the temple in the presence of God. The contrast is striking, right? Because the pool had become a symbol of everything the man lacked, while the temple represented the God who had supplied what he could never have provided for himself. What began as a story about a man's condition ultimately became a story about a relationship with the one who changed his life. And this is an important reminder for all of us, right? While God cares deeply about our conditions and circumstances, his ultimate purpose is not simply to improve our situation. His desire is to draw us closer to himself. The miracle was never intended to become the destination. It was intended to become a doorway into a deeper walk with God. Another detail that stands out is what is happening around the man at this point in the story. So while he is found in the temple, the religious leaders are focused on something entirely different. Rather than celebrating the fact that a man who had suffered for 38 years was now walking, they became preoccupied with the fact that he was carrying his mat on the Sabbath. The very people who should have recognized the hand of God were unable to see beyond their traditions, expectations, and interpretation of the law. The system, in other words, noticed the mat but missed the miracle. It focused on the method while overlooking the miracle, the transformation that had taken place. Sadly, that still happens today. There are times when God moves powerfully in a person's life, yet not everyone recognizes what he is doing. Some people become so fixated on methods and traditions and completely miss what God is doing, the miracle and transformation that's taking place before their very eyes. What is particularly instructive is that the man doesn't appear distracted by any of this. We don't see him defending himself or arguing his case or seeking approval from those who challenged him. Instead, we find this man in the temple. Now there's wisdom in that. Because not everyone will understand your journey. Not everyone will celebrate what God has done in your life. Not everyone will recognize the significance of your breakthrough. Yet none of those responses should become the focus of your attention. This man teaches us that when God changes your story, your priority should not be convincing others. Your priority should be remaining close to the one who changed it. As we conclude this series, perhaps this is the greatest lesson of all. Testimony reminded us that what God has done in our lives can strengthen others. Yet all these lessons ultimately point towards one destination, and that is a deeper relationship with God. The final image in this story is not a man beside a pool. It's not about a man carrying a mat. The final image is a man found in the temple, standing in the presence of God. And perhaps that was the real destination all along. So what are the three takeaways that we can take from this final lesson? Number one, God's ultimate purpose is not simply to change our circumstances, but to draw us closer to Him. Number two, not everyone will recognize or celebrate what God is doing in your life and my life, but their response should not distract you and me from God's presence. And number three, every breakthrough, lesson, and testimony is an open invitation into a deeper relationship with God. Amen. So what is the final application from this series? You know, over the past days we've encouraged you to invite a trusted friend, mentor, prayer partner, or mature believer into your journey. In day one, we reflected on the environments that shape our thinking. In day two, we considered whether we truly wanted change and explored some of the hidden barriers that can keep us stuck. In day three, we discussed trusting God's voice even when his instructions seemed to contradict our reality. In day four, we examined the identities that can form around our struggles. In day five, we reflected on the courage required not only to get up but to stay up. And in day six, we considered the power of testimony and how God can use our stories to encourage others. So as we come to the end of the series, why not take some time to reflect on the entire journey? Ask yourself which lesson has challenged you most deeply and where you believe God has been speaking more clearly. Share your reflections with your trusted partner. Discuss what practical changes you've made and what areas still require attention. Where might God be inviting you to move next? Ask them to pray with you and continue walking alongside you as a source of encouragement, wisdom, and accountability. One of the greatest benefits, remember, of inviting others into our journey is that they help us remain focused on growth rather than simply inspiring us. They help us to stay honest about the commitments we've made and remind us of the truths God has been teaching us when life becomes busy or difficult. The goal of this series has never been simply to complete seven days of study. The goal has been to draw closer to God. So before we pray, let's spend a few moments thanking God for the journey that he's taken us on throughout this series. Thank him for every lesson learned, every challenge faced, and every area where he's been at work in our lives. Thank him for the courage to get up, the strength to stay up, and the grace to keep walking. Most of all, thank him that his greatest gift is not simply changed circumstances, but it's his presence. The word says in Psalm eighty-four and verse ten, better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. Thank him that he still invites us into his presence and that the greatest destination we could ever reach is a deeper relationship with him. So let's pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you for walking with us throughout this journey. Thank you for every lesson you've taught us, every challenge you've brought us through, and every area where you've been at work in our lives. Thank you for the story of Bethesda, which reminds us that you're still able to meet people in places of disappointment, limitation, and waiting. Thank you that you still call us to rise, to walk, and to move forward in faith. Father, help us never to become so focused on the breakthrough that we lose sight of you. Draw us closer to your presence, Lord. Teach us to seek you above every blessing, above every answer, and above every miracle in the name of Jesus. When others fail to understand our journey, Father, help us to remain focused on you. When distractions arise, keep our hearts fixed on you. When life becomes difficult, Father, remind us that your presence is greater than any circumstance we could ever face. Thank you, Lord, for the courage to get up. Thank you, Lord, for the strength to stay up. Thank you for the grace to keep walking. Father, may our lives, like the man at Bethesda, ultimately be found in your presence, giving glory to the one who changed everything. In Jesus' name. Amen. Well, I trust that you have really found insights and knowledge and wisdom from this whole teaching series. It has truly been a blessing in my life, and there are episodes that I know I keep going back and listening to and praying about because I know that God is speaking to me as I believe He's been speaking to you also over and throughout these series. In closing, let me say may you have the courage to get up, the strength to stay up, and the grace to keep walking. May your life be a testimony to God's faithfulness, and may you always be found in His presence. God bless you.
